I bought this SSD to replace an Intel SSD 510 that I had previously bought for my MacBook Pro 13" 2011 that was freezing ("beach balling") randomly. After trying everything I could to solve the issue with the Intel drive I finally gave up after reading so many comments in forums that made me conclude that these early 2011 MacBook Pros don't like SATA3 (6 Gbps) SSDs despite being supposedly SATA3 compatible (people seem to have been having problems with both Marvel and Sandforce SATA3 controllers).

To make sure I would avoid further compatibility issues I decided to aim for a "sure fire" solution by getting an SSD that has exactly the same Toshiba controller used in the SSDs that Apple sells on their custom machines. And this is it.

It is slightly slower than the Intel 510 on benchmarks (since this is a SATA2 drive), but I cannot tell the difference on my day-to-day usage. Besides, it has the advantage of having a very aggressive "garbage collection" mechanism that helps to keep the drive from the performance degradation issues that are common in systems without TRIM support (Mac OS X still does not support TRIM for SSD's not sold by Apple).

But the main advantage has been having a 100% compatible drive without the annoying ramdom freezes that I was getting with the previous drive. That alone makes this the optimal upgrade to a MacBook Pro 2011 if you want screaming SSD speeds but haven't bought a custom MacBook Pro equipped with Apple's own supplied SSD.

Finally, this kit comes with a very handy (and decent quality) external enclosure that makes it very easy to clone your existing drive to this one and then switch them afterwards (you then keep the original spinning drive as an external drive as a bonus!).

I bought this drive to replace boot drive in my Linux box. Installation was simple (took out old drive, put the new into included 3.5" brackets, connect cables). Installed Ubuntu 11.04 onto it, and everything just worked. Booting Ubuntu 11.04 from this drive is fast. Any faster, and we'd be talking about instant.

My only complaint is the price. I bought 128GB drive, which is a bit close to what I expect I'll need over next few year, since 256GB was a bit too expensive to justify buying it right now (my old Linux system had 250GB drive, out which around 80-90GB was used). I do hope price of flash memory will go down significantly in next few years.

This is the second Kingston SSD I've used to increase the reliability and speed of a couple year old laptop. Increasing memeory and adding this SSD will allow users to get more years of life out of thier computers. This upgrade is very easy and anyone who can figure out how to get to thier internal harddrive can complete it.
